32 | Staff interviewed stated they had occasionally smelled gas in the weeks prior; however, the strong smell occurred on one day believed to be April 13, 2026. Staff reported that when the odor was strong, children were immediately relocated outside or to alternate classrooms, windows were opened, and office staff informed them that SDG&E had been contacted and was in route. Staff consistently stated that SDG&E had previously visited the facility in March to turn off the gas and then returned in April to fix the leak. Multiple staff also reported that SDG&E gave the “all clear” before children were allowed back inside.
Daycare children interviewed stated they did not smell anything unusual on the day in question. However, one daycare child reported she smelled “something funny,” but she could not recall the specific date when this occurred.
According to daycare parents interviewed, some parents noticed the smell on April 13, 2026, and had no concerns. A parent message provided to the LPA, dated 04/13/26, confirmed that parents reported concerns on the same day SDG&E was present to repair the leak.
Due to conflicting information obtained throughout the course of the investigation and no other witnesses to the alleged incidents, LPA was unable to determine whether or not the allegations occurred. Although the allegation may have happened or is valid, there is not a preponderance of evidence to prove the alleged violation did or did not occur; therefore, the allegation is UNSUBSTANTIATED.
Exit interview conducted and report was reviewed with the center director Roxanna Larios. A notice of site visit was given and must remain posted for 30 days |
